The chairmanship of the IIC should be given to all schools of thought, the national institution must not be sacrificed for political gains – Hamid Moosavi

ISLAMABAD, September 21: The Patron-in-Chief of Supreme Shia Ulema Board Quaid-i-Millat Jafariya Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi has said that the Ideology Council has been turned into Ijtehad Council to politicize the Islamic Ideology Council. Are its members placed at the status of Ijtehad? If the applicant would be declared cognizable to death sentence on proving the crime of blasphemy then what the Muftis of the Ideology Council would give Fatwa on setting the terrorists free owing to weak witnesses and their release in those cases? He expressed these views during a meeting with the office-bearers of Supreme Shia Ulema Board here at Al-Murtaza.

Agha Moosavi while commenting on the recent decision of the Islamic Ideology Council asked how many Council members are placed at the status of Ijtehad? He made it clear that objective of the Islamic Ideology Council was to lay down recommendations for setting up Islamic society and to fulfil their obligation to transform the existing laws into Islamic framework. Therefore the Islamic Advisory Council was created under Section 204 of the 1962 Constitution under the leadership of Justice Abu Saleh Muhammad Akram and after him its leadership was handed over to Allama Alauddin Siddiqui. In the 1973 Constitution, there was room to set up Islamic Ideology Council and whereas the directives to form Islamic Ideology Council were stated in this as well as the reference of Islamic Council was also given making it clear that it means that there would be Islamic Ideology Council and the number of its members would be from 8 to 20.

The TNFJ chief said that it was decided that all schools of thought would be given representation. He asked whether the present members fulfil the constitutional requirement. Whether the representative organisations of the two main schools of thought Ahle Sunnat and Ahle Tasheyyo verified and approved any of these members. He said there is consensus on the punishment of blasphemy but what is the purpose of giving death sentence to the complainant who fails to prove this crime? He said the chairman of the IIC always belonged to a particular school of thought while almost all members are appointed by every government under political consideration. Similarly, the present members were the blue-eyed persons of the previous government and their representation was not verified by any representative organisation of any recognised school of thought. He said the present IIC members could be called Sunni, Shia, Barelvi, Ahle Hadees but they are not representatives of their respective Makatib.

The Quaid-i-Millat Jafariya Agha Syed Hamid Ali Shah Moosavi appealed the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take immediate suo moto notice and investigate that how many Mujtahid-e-Mutliq and Mujtahid-e-Mutjazi are amongst the present IIC members? Moreover whether they fulfil the criteria of IIC conditions? If not so then action may be taken against them forthwith.
